Crewe’s reconstruction continues unabated

Between 2014–2023, Macclesfield received £26m in support from Cheshire East Council – Crewe received £141m – nearly seven times more.

The result of the council’s excessive generosity in Crewe is that Cheshire East Council had a near £20 million overspend in 2023 – but that’s not stopped councillors ploughing ahead with even more expenditure.

The proposed new History Centre and public space in Crewe

Crewe library is currently undergoing demolition, in preparation for the construction of a new History Centre.

The former library, vacant since 2016, is being bulldozed to make way for the History Centre along with a new public square – between the new Lifestyle Centre and new Memorial Square.

The new History Centre will, in conjunction with another new history development in Hoole, house Cheshire’s archives, which are currently held in Chester.

Macclesfield’s council tax payers, along with those from Knutsford, Wilmslow, Alderley, Middlewich and Sandbach must be thrilled to see that the council’s dire financial state hasn’t impacted on its desire to transform virtually the whole of Crewe.

Despite what’s happening Cheshire East continues to blame the cancellation of HS2 for its financial problems – in truth it’s due to appalling financial mismanagement.
