A special event at Art Fair 2016 this month will give visitors the chance to hear contemporary British artist, Susie MacMurray, talk about her striking portfolio.

A former classical musician, her work includes drawing, sculpture and architectural installations. The artist has gained an international reputation for poetic site-specific pieces which take inspiration from the history of a space and examine the relationship between place and people.

Drawing is an important part of MacMurray’s practice. In addition to her large scale pen & ink work she extends the possibilities of making drawings using unconventional materials. As well as drawing and installation she is internationally know for her garment sculptures constructed from materials such as dressmaker’s pins, domestic gloves and handmade chainmail.

In 2012 MacMurray was commissioned by Macclesfield Barnaby Festival (with Arts Council funding) to produce a piece of work for Paradise Mill. The resulting artwork, entitled Cocoon, was inspired by the town’s silk heritage and included hundreds of silk moth cocoons suspended in a curtain of silk.

Susie MacMurray says: “I’m delighted to be involved with Art Fair 2016, which is raising money for East Cheshire Hospice. It is a cause that is very close to my heart. As a Cheshire-based artist, it’s lovely to be invited to share my practice close to home, in Macclesfield Town Hall. I’m looking forward to seeing the venue filled with the work of exhibiting artists.”

MacMurray was invited to take part in Art Fair 2016 by former gallery owner and Art Fair volunteer, Lucy Seker, who says: “I’ve always loved Susie’s work and we’re thrilled she’s agreed to come and give this talk. It’s a great opportunity for people to find out more about the creative process and to ask questions if they want to. Her work is fascinating so I’d encourage everyone to come along.”
